Official: OnePlus 2 will be one of the first smartphones to feature a USB Type-C port

OnePlus 2 USB Type C 3.1

OnePlus is officially getting the hype train rolling for their upcoming OnePlus 2, the followup to last year’s (frustrating) OnePlus One flagship. Today they announced on social media that the phone will be the first Android flagship to feature USB Type C, a reversible port that doesn’t care which way you insert the cable in (similar to Apple’s Lightning port on the iPhone).

The connection does more than just charge devices (which tops out at 100 watts vs USB 2.0’s 2.5 watts), allowing video output as well thanks to higher speeds. Google committed to the new connector back when they unveiled the Chromebook Pixel 2 in March, so we expect it will also arrive in this year’s Nexus launching at the end of this year. OnePlus seems confident their flagship will be the first to use the new spec, so we expect a OnePlus 2 launch is right around the corner.

Sony’s “Thinner Than Your Smartphone” 55-Inch 4K LED TV With Android TV is Now Up for Pre-Order

thin ass sony android tv3

At this year’s CES, Sony unveiled a TV that got more traffic than just about every other TV I found myself in front of throughout the week. The popular TV was Sony’s 55-inch 4K “Ultra-Thin” LED model that ran Android TV. People couldn’t stop from halting in front if it to take a picture because it is insanely thin. Seriously, it was so crazy thin that even we (non-TV guys) stopped with mouths dropped to take a couple of pics (that we of course can’t find now).

Sony claims the TV is thinner than your smartphone or pencil at “approximately” 0.2-inches.

It also runs Android TV, so you get access to Google Play and many of its apps, is Cast ready, and has a “vanishing edge” screen. Really, though, all of us only care because of how thin this bad boy is. Look at the pic below and try to tell me you aren’t at least somewhat impressed.

We’re talking about it today because it’s now up for pre-order at Amazon for $ 2500. Yes, it’s expensive for a 120Hz TV, but Samsung’s new TVs are hovering right around that price point as well. (It should be at Best Buy before long as well.)

Any takers?

Google is inviting you to test their new 16-camera virtual reality recording rig

google jump vr camera array

Google is creating an awesome camera array that features 16 GoPro shooters. Jump VR is what they call it, and as the name suggests it will allow film makers to capture their scenes in virtual reality goodness for use with VR headsets, YouTube’s 360-degree video feature and more.

And now they want people to help test it. If you’re a filmmaker of the serious (and creative) variety you can head right here to apply to test one of these bad boys. Google will ask for some basic information about where you live, who you are and what you intend to do with Jump VR.

If they like your proposal enough you may find yourself with an insane new camera rig to play with later this summer. If not? Well, Google will send you about updates about the progress of Jump VR, including (hopefully) eventual availability.

OnePlus Confirms Second Flagship Will Feature USB Type-C

oneplus one

Over on Twitter, OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 2 will feature USB Type-C, possibly making it the first Android flagship device released with the feature. There is no confirmed release date for the device yet, but OnePlus seems rather confident in this fact, according to the tweet.

“We want to lead the way in power connectivity,” the company tweets. And yes, if they do include USB Type-C, they would be leading the way. Currently, the only other device rumored to launch this year with Type-C is the Galaxy Note 5, but that won’t be announced until September during IFA, most likely.

As we inch closer to an official unveiling and release, you can rest assured that OnePlus will continue to share additional details and specs for the OnePlus 2.

Deal: Buy a 64GB Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge at Full Retail, Get $100 Rebate From Samsung

galaxy s6 review-11

T-Mobile is currently offering a free storage upgrade on Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge purchases that doubles your 32GB to 64GB or 64GB to 128GB at no extra cost. That’s a great deal and all, but Samsung may have just sweetened the deal for those who are actually interested in purchasing the 64GB version of phone from T-Mobile. They are also offering a solid $ 100 off for those who buy the phone from other carriers.

Samsung’s “Ultimate Upgrade” promo that kicked off this weekend runs from June 21 through July 5. With this promo, Samsung will send you a $ 100 rebate should you buy a 64GB Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge “at the carrier or national retailer of your choice.” The point is to make up the $ 100 difference in 32GB and 64GB models.

You see how this could be an incredible deal for T-Mobile customers? T-Mobile is already upgrading you to 64GB at the price of the 32GB, but if you buy the phone out-right, you are then getting $ 100 from Samsung as well. So you could land a 64GB model from T-Mobile for $ 579. Not bad, right?

We cruised through the rebate details and don’t see any mention of T-Mobile models being excluded.

For the rest of you who aren’t interested in phones from T-Mobile, you are still eligible for a $ 100 rebate if you buy either the S6 or S6 Edge at full retail.

T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S5 is receiving Android 5.1.1 Lollipop today

Samsung Galaxy S5 wood DSC05784

T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have gotten Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and now yesteryear’s counterpart is in line. Android 5.1.1 for the Samsung Galaxy S5 is rolling out starting today, with folks able to pull it down over-the-air and through Samsung Kies.

There’s no word yet on what, exactly, is different. Our hope would be that the device will receive Camera RAW support like the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are currently enjoying, but we’ll have to wait for further reports and testing to see if that’s on tap. At the least we can expect improved performance and other enhancements, as well as bug fixes galore.

Be sure to download it and report back with your impressions once you’ve gotten it loaded up!

T-Mobile Galaxy S5 Now Receiving Android 5.1.1 Update

samsung galaxy s5

The T-Mobile variant of the Samsung Galaxy S5 is now receiving an update to Android 5.1.1, build G900TUVU1FOF6. This update gives T-Mobile yet another of their phones the newest version of Android. A week ago, they posted a similar update for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

So what’s new in this update? T-Mobile added 5.1.1’s new anti-theft feature, which forces you (or someone who stole your phone) to login to your Google account even after a factory reset. The rest of the update should be Lollipop stability improvements and bug fixes.

T-Mobile claims that the update is 695MB. That seems excessive for such a minor update.

Let us know if you get it!

You can now pre-order the Pebble Time for $200 at Best Buy

pebble time hero 1

Didn’t get in on the Pebble Time Kickstarter? You’ll be happy to know that the retail pre-sale has kicked off exclusively at Best Buy. $ 200 will get you a color e-paper smartwatch that’s bound to last days instead of mere hours.

The hot new feature for Pebble is the Timeline, a system that delivers the information and notifications most important to you when and when they make sense. Appointment coming up on your calendar? Timeline will show it to you first before reminding you about a dinner later that evening. If your favorite sports team just got finished playing a game it’d probably decide to show you its score before anything else.

Pebble Time will also deliver more rich watch faces and apps thanks to its colored UI, a microphone for dictating voice responses and more. Best Buy has them in White, Black and Red, so take your pick and place your order in anticipation of its arrival (which Best Buy currently expects to happen on July 22nd).

This is Likely the New Moto G (3rd Gen) With Tweaked Design, 13MP and 5MP Cameras

moto g 3rd gen 2015

Over the weekend, a random leak of what appears to be the new Moto G (3rd gen) showed up in a 2-minute video and series of pictures. The unit made public is clearly an engineering test model that lacks most Motorola branding, but does have all sort of identifiers to help Motorola track down whoever’s unit this was supposed to be.

The video shows, through a variety of benchmarks, all of the phones specs, along with the shape that the phone may take on when it’s finalized. According to this video, we are looking at another 5-inch 720p display, Snapdragon 410 (MSM8916) processor, 1GB RAM, 13MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, Android 5.1.1, and LTE connectivity.

It looks, well, a lot like last year’s Moto G only it has a redesigned back panel that features a silver panel that houses the Motorola dimple, camera, and flash. We have seen this same shape leak in purported pictures of the new Moto X (3rd gen) as well.

Assuming Motorola sticks to the same Moto G formula as it has for the past couple of years, this phone should be well-priced at under $ 200.

This phone will likely launch around the time of the new Moto X.

Sony Releases Android M Developer Preview for 12 Xperia Devices

xperia z3 compact review-8

Sony has shocked a few people this week, including myself, releasing an Android M Developer Preview build for a total of 12 Xperia devices. In a blog post, Sony goes over the importance of preparing for the official Android M launch, giving developers time to test apps and play with new APIs.

To be exact, the Android M preview has been released for the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia E3, Xperia M2, Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia T3. In terms of device support, this is pretty impressive considering you don’t see any other OEM allowing for this.

Flashing Android M does not look to be overly complicated. All you will need to download is the file itself, binaries, and then verify your apps upon completion. Do note, Sony stresses that these builds are not meant for daily usage. You will need an unlocked bootloader, and in addition, the modem and the camera have not been implemented.

Now, if someone could go ahead and convince Samsung, LG, HTC, and Motorola that this is a cool thing, we’re in business.

Where to pre-order Sony’s razor-thin 4KHD Android TV sets ahead of July launch

Sony Bravia Android TV DSC07656

Sony has confirmed that their Android TV units are going on sale starting next month. If you don’t remember, these bad boys were at CES, and the main reason they got so much attention was due to their razor-thin profile. They’re probably more slim than your wallet. Here’s a shot of its side profile up against a typical smartphone.

Sony Bravia Android TV DSC07651

Yep, it’s sexy. We’ve also gotten confirmed pricing for the units, and you’ll want to take a seat before taking it in:

  • 55-inch Ultra HD X900C 4K for $ 2,499

  • 65-inch Ultra HD X900C 4K for $ 3,999

  • 75-inch Ultra HD X910C 4K for $ 5,499

My bank account weeps. If you’re in need of a 4K Smart TV and have the funds you can actually pre-order starting today in-store at Sony and Best Buy. The units already have listings on Best Buy’s site, but their pre-sale function is not yet live. Amazon also has pre-sales available right here, ifyou prefer that route. Will you splurge on one of these or pass for something more affordable? Be sure to let us know with a comment below!

Pebble Time Pre-Orders Now Open at Best Buy

pebble-2

Pebble Time, the new kids toy smartwatch from Kickstarter darling Pebble, is now available for pre-order from Best Buy. With Kickstarter orders almost all fulfilled, it’s time for everyone else to get in on the fun that is this new colorful e-paper experience. At $ 199, the Pebble Time in red, white, or black can be yours.

According to Best Buy, shipping should happen on or around July 20, in case you were wondering when your pre-order might arrive on your doorstep.

As you can tell, we have a Pebble Time in house. Our man Ron will soon be taking on review duties since he is well-versed in the world of Pebble, so stick around for that. What I can tell you from my short time with this watch is that the overall feel is very much like the original. It’s unapologetically plastic and probably isn’t going to convince anyone that it is a $ 200 smartwatch, especially when you compare it to something like the $ 200 ZenWatch that is more powerful, has a stainless steel body with hand-stitched leather strap, and a touch screen.

But Pebble is relying on its new UI to blow minds, along with 5-7 day battery life from its color e-paper display. Can it compete with the touchscreen options powered by Google or created by Apple? Only time will tell (lulz).

How to shoot photos in RAW on the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge with Android 5.1

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Camera DSC09314

We’d heard the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge would be getting Camera RAW support with their Android 5.1 update (which is currently going out on T-Mobile variants), but there was no option to use it in Samsung’s camera app. Thankfully the update did bring proper support, but you’ll have to go about accessing it a different way.

That different way is a simple download of an alternate camera application. Users have reported downloading Snap Camera HDR or Camera FV-5 and being able to enable Android’s new Camera API 2 through simple menu settings, which then allowed those apps to shoot photos in full RAW goodness.

What are the benefits of shooting in RAW?

You’ll get a full image that has been unprocessed. The effect it has on the image might seem bad at first — particularly in the areas of notable noise and artifacting  — but the result is a file that has 100% accurate color information, which in turn allows you to make a very wide range of tweaks to get your image just right.

You would usually mitigate those effects in your post-processing routine. OEM camera apps tend to do this by default with a built-in post-processing engine, but they tend to be very limited, drop a lot of non-recoverable color information and offer up one-size-fits-all results.

Who’s this useful for?

Shooting in RAW is mainly for anyone who likes to process and edit their images on their own in apps like Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop. It’s more for serious photography than anything else.

For instance, you’d want to use it on some vacation shots of the Grand Canyon, but it’s probably overkill for that one-off selfie you’re planning to put on Instagram. It’s up to each user to decide whether they want to shoot in RAW or go the default route, as well as to decide what’s appropriate for whichever situation they’re using it in.

For more on shooting and editing in RAW you can read up here. If you’re convinced it’s for you then be sure to download the aforementioned camera apps (here or here) for use on your Samsung Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge. Let’s hope Samsung offers the goods up in their own camera app in a future update.

Moto X (2nd Gen) “Pure Edition” Getting Another New Android 5.1 Update

moto x leather 4 months later-7

After announcing that it was pushing a soak test and another Lollipop update to a couple of Moto X (1st gen) units over the weekend, Motorola also snuck in a new 5.1 update to the Moto X (2nd gen) “Pure Edition.” I’m not sure why they didn’t take to G+ or any other outlet to announce the news, but it is indeed happening. The odd thing here is that comes about a month after Motorola supposedly already pushed an update to this version of the Moto X (2nd gen).

If you are currently running one of the various 5.1 builds out there for this phone, like 23.1.28 or 23.11.14, you may not be able to pull this (I certainly can’t). It seems like this update may be for those coming from KitKat rather than those of us who picked up early soak test builds of 5.1. It’s really tough to tell, especially without word from Motorola.

I can’t keep up anymore…anyone seeing this update? Can you tell us what version of Android you were running prior to this update?

Deal: Nexus Player is just $64 at Amazon

nexus-player-hero

Amazon has a pretty nice deal on the Nexus Player right now. You can grab it for just $ 64 and change, which is a long way from its usual price tag of $ 100.

The Nexus Player was the first commercial Android TV device, and although it may not have all the bells and whistles you could dream of — like HDMI passthrough — it can definitely provide a very capable and competent smart TV experience in the absence of having smart TV features built-in.

nexus-player-android-tv-google-play

It’s better than having to spend thousands on a whole new set of glass, anyway. Be sure to head to Amazon and order one before its price hikes back up. (PS: consider picking up the optional gamepad if you’re looking to do some gaming on the thing, too.)

Unlocked Moto X (1st Gen) Now Getting Lollipop in the US, Here are the Changes

moto x walnut

Wednesdays are known as “#UpdateWednesday” around the Android world, thanks to Google rolling out update after update to their apps and services each week on hump day. Fridays may now be taken as well, as Motorola seems to have adopted the end of the week as their opportunity to push updates to their line of smartphones. Quick, someone come up with a clever name for it outside of “UpdateFriday.”

Yesterday, Motorola not only kicked off a soak test for the Verizon Moto X (2nd gen) that should end up as an update to Android 5.1.1, they also started the full rollout of Android 5.1 (build 222.21.15) to the unlocked Moto X (1st gen)

According to Motorola’s David Schuster, a man who has quickly become the official voice of Motorola’s update schedule, “full deployment of the 5.1 Android Lollipop upgrade” is go in the US, Brazil and Rogers (Canada). Again, this is the unlocked version of the Moto X, so don’t go checking for updates on your Verizon or AT&T models. Those are likely still going through testing and could be a bit.

Here is the pop-up you will see when the update hits your device. Also, feel free to check for it in Settings>About phone – it may very well be ready for all owners of the unlocked model in the US.

Screenshot (08-54PM, Jun 19, 2015)

The full changelog for the update can be found below.

Material DesignYou will quickly notice a whole new colorful look and feel to your device – from fluid animations to new application and system themes, colors and widgets.
Notifications UI & PrioritiesIn order to alert you to the most timely and relevant information, the format and behavior of notifications have evolved:
  • Notifications will appear on the lockscreen and are intelligently ranked by type and who sent them.

  • You double-tap to open one, swipe left or right to clear one, or clear all notifications from the bottom of the list.

  • You can set the priority and privacy of notifications for each application.

  • Very high priority notifications will pop up briefly over other applications so that you can take action.

  • When you dismiss a notification on one device it will be dismissed on your other Android devices, if they are connected to the Internet.

  • You can further tailor how notifications behave with the new Downtime and Ambient Display settings (see below).

  • You can block interruptions until your next alarm. This choice will show only when you have an alarm set within the next 12 hours. It will prevent you from missing an alarm when you choose ‘No interruptions’.

  • You can choose to enter a scheduled downtime early. For example, if you are going to bed early and change your notification settings, you can choose “Until your downtime ends”. This option will be visible when within 4 hours of the scheduled start of your downtime.

  • Adds icons to the volume settings panel that match those that will show in the status bar (None, Priority).

  • You can now alter notification volume controls while media is playing. With the volume controls showing, a tap on the bell icon will bring up notification volume controls.

New Interruptions & Downtime SettingsYou can tailor how interruptions behave, choosing to allow all, none, or only priority interruptions. You can personalize what counts as a priority interruption (reminders, events, calls, messages) and even tailor them to be from only contacts you specify. The Downtime setting will allow only priority interruptions during the times and days that you specify. e.g. allow only priority interruptions on the weekend.
Recent Apps (Multi-tasking)The redesigned Overview space (formerly called Recents) will include both applications and separate activities within those applications. For instance, each open tab in Chrome will also appear here along with recent applications; both your Gmail Inbox and a draft email message will appear as separate cards. This provides a consistent way to switch amongst tasks.
MotoYour Moto phone adapts to you, not the other way around. Moto now incorporates Motorola Assist, Motorola Active Display, Moto Voice (Touchless Control), and Moto Actions.
Moto Display and Ambient DisplayWhile your phone’s display is off, Moto Display will continue to surface relevant notifications to you using the low-power Contextual Computing Processor.

Android Lollipop now includes a similar feature, called Ambient Display, that displays notifications like those shown on the lockscreen. If you prefer to try the new Ambient Display feature, you can uncheck the Moto Display setting in the Moto app. Note: Ambient Display does not use Motorola’s low-power core and will turn on more of the display, so battery life may be impacted. The Moto Actions Approach gesture will not wake Ambient Display.

Moto Assist and DowntimeMoto Assist integrates the new Downtime feature within Android Lollipop to control when you don’t want to be disturbed. Moto Assist also now uses the new Interruptions settings so that you can customize exceptions, such as letting only people on your starred contacts list get through.
FlashlightLollipop includes a new flashlight option as part of Quick settings (swipe down with two fingers from the status bar to see it).
Quick SettingsYou can quickly select different Wi-Fi access points or different paired Bluetooth devices with a new pull-down menu on each tile. Conditional settings tiles that only show if you use the feature – like “Invert Colors” or “Hotspot” – can now be hidden via a long-press on the tile.
Share your DeviceYou can now set up multiple user accounts on your phone. Guest mode is enabled by default. You can give calling and text privileges to other users of your device, or restrict them as you like in the Users menu under Settings.

Note that the personalized Moto experiences (Moto Assist, Moto Voice, Moto Display, Moto Actions) and Motorola Connect are for the owner account only.

The Motorola Camera and Gallery applications support multiple user accounts.

Pin a view/appScreen pinning allows you to keep a specific app or screen in view. For example, you can ‘pin’ a game and your child will not be able to navigate anywhere else on your phone.
BatteryThe Battery settings panel now shows an estimated projection for how much time you have left while discharging or charging. You can also enable a new battery saver mode that will save power by reducing performance and most background data operations to extend your battery life.
Smarter Internet ConnectionsWith Android Lollipop, your phone will not connect to a Wi-Fi access point unless there is a verified internet connection. This feature improves hand-offs between Wi-Fi and cellular connections, helping to maintain your video chat or voice-over-IP (VoIP) call as you switch.
PerformanceYour phone now uses the new Android Runtime to help optimize application performance. After upgrading to Lollipop, your applications will undergo a one-time optimization process. Note that the optimization for ART requires more space.
Smart Lock
(Trusted Devices)
Android Lollipop adds native support for allowing trusted devices to keep your phone unlocked (such as your Moto 360, a Bluetooth car kit or headset, etc.). Smart Lock replaces the prior trusted device capability in your Motorola phone. Note that you will need to add your trusted devices back after the transition to Lollipop in the Security settings menu under Smart Lock.

Soak Test for Moto X (2nd Gen) on Verizon Starting, Probably Android 5.1

moto x 2nd gen-8

A soak test to preview “a new software release” for the Moto X (2nd gen) from Verizon is starting this weekend (maybe even this minute), according to a number of our readers. The update should be Android 5.1, which is good news for those who have had a rough go of it since receiving the update to 5.0 back in late 2014.

Assuming the update does well during the test, the rest of the Verizon Moto X (2nd gen) community should be receiving it in no time. Typically, if a test is successful, the update rolls out publicly within a week or so.

Anyone receive the update? Let us know any info you can.

Cheers J, M, and K!

Toca Hair Salon 2 is Google Play Family’s free app of the week

google-play-family-home-edit

Google Play’s free app of the week may be limited to kids, but it’s still an interesting little promotion that the Mountain View company has never done before. If you happen to need or enjoy these children’s games you’ll want to get your hands on this week’s offer.

It’s Toca Hair Salon 2, which — you guessed it — allows you to customize the hair of fictional toons with a wide selection of accessories, styles and probably copious amounts of hair spray. It’s usually $ 2.99, so if the price tag has kept you from getting your hands on it then there’s no excuse not to have it now. Grab it from Google Play right here.

A look at the new features in Android 5.1.1 on the Moto 360 [VIDEO]

Android 5.1.1 for smartwatches has been out for a little while now, but Motorola took some extra time to make sure it was ready for the Motorola Moto 360. It’s finally rolling out now. This might be the biggest update Android Wear has seen to date. There are many new features and improvements that make the whole experience feel much more mature. Let’s take a look at some of the best new things.

Finally a built-in launcher

5-1-1 launcher

When Android Wear was brand new a lot of people thought it was missing an app launcher. There were a few different 3rd-party solutions, but it never felt like they belonged on Android Wear. Google has introduced an app launcher in Android 5.1 that feels much better. You can tap the watch face or swipe to the left to bring up a list of apps (the most recent are displayed on top).

The launcher is not just for apps. It’s actually made up of three pages: apps, contacts, and search. The first page shows the list of apps, but swipe again and you’ll see some commonly contacted people from your contacts. Tap on a person and you can send them a message. Swipe over once more and you’ll see the Google voice search page that used to pop up when tapping the watch face.

Use the watch without your phone

5-1-1 wifi

Android 5.1 adds WiFi connectivity to supported smartwatches. The Moto 360 happens to be one of the devices that can use this feature. You can connect your watch to a WiFi network and use it without being connected to your phone. Notifications and voice searches will still work on the watch. This feature is not intended to replace your phone completely, but it’s nice for those times when your phone disconnects.

Lock your watch when it’s not on your wrist

5-1-1 lock

Phones are full of personal data and information, which is why there are so many different security methods we can use. Smartwatches don’t typically store much personal data, so we haven’t really thought about how to secure them. Google has introduced a new feature called “screen lock” that should help the situation.

In the settings you can create a pattern password like you would on any Android phone. The idea is that when your watch detects the absence of motion, like if it’s charging on a desk, the screen lock will automatically engage. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get this to work. You can also instantly turn on the screen lock from the settings.

Send hand-drawn emoji

5-1-1 emoji

One of the coolest new features in Android 5.1 is the ability to draw emoji. When you tap “Reply” to a message you can scroll down to see a new option for “Draw emoji.” It basically works like handwriting recognition, only instead of letters you’re drawing emoji.

Draw a smiley face and it will give you the smiley face emoji. Draw a weird squiggle and you might get the poop emoji. Some of the more intricate emoji are harder to draw, but it’s still fun. You can also simply choose emoji from a list if you don’t feel like drawing.

Ambient mode for apps

5-1-1 ambient

In previous versions of Android Wear it was nearly impossible to use apps for any extended period of time. Once the screen turned off it would close anything you were doing and go back to the watch face. This was really annoying if you were trying to cross things off a list, or browse an app. Android 5.1 fixes this problem.

Apps can now run in ambient mode (or “Always on”) if developers support it, which means they stay visible on the screen when it turns to black and white. If you don’t use ambient mode the app will still be in the foreground even if the display turns off. The best example of this right now is Google Keep.

Android 5.1 is a much-needed update, and it has breathed life back into the Moto 360. All of these new features and improvements make for a much more polished experience. How has your experience with Android 5.1 on smartwatches been so far? Which device do you own? Check out the Android Wear section of AndroidForums.com for more about Android 5.1.1.

Deal: $209 for This Refurbished Verizon Moto X (2nd Gen)

moto x deal

Motorola may be failing miserably at providing Lollipop updates to its line of flagships from 2014, but that doesn’t mean their phones aren’t still worth a look at the right price. For example, you can grab the Moto X (2nd gen) on Verizon for just $ 209.99. That’s a crazy good deal on any phone, let alone the phone we called 2014’s best.

Now, keep in mind that the phone is manufacturer refurbished, so it’s not “brand new.” Still, $ 200 for this good of a phone that will certainly get Lollipop in the very near future is almost a no-brainer if you need a new, cheap phone.

This deal includes 16GB black, white (might be bamboo), or “red” (might be football leather) color choices. Free shipping is also included.

How to: Setup and Use WiFi on Android Wear

wifi android wear

The Android 5.1.1 update for Android Wear introduced what I would consider to be the most important new feature since the platform launched. I’m talking about WiFi connectivity of course, which lets you have some freedom from your phone and the Bluetooth connection that previously tied phone to watch.

With WiFi connectivity on your watch, you could leave your phone on the other side of your house or office, lose that Bluetooth connection, yet still sync notifications to your wrist. You still get to interact with notifications, respond to messages via voice, and launch Google voice actions. This really is one of those game-changing type features because it allows your watch to be less reliant on having your phone nearby at all times.

And with that in mind, we thought we should walk through the setup process for WiFi on your smartwatch because the process isn’t as straight-forward as one would hope. There are things like Cloud Sync and “Automatic WiFi” involved, none of which you would probably think to look for without being told. Thankfully, once you have WiFi ready to go, it’s one of those things that you can set and forget, as the hand-off from Bluetooth to WiFi should happen automatically going forward.

In the video below, you will find the instructions in a step-by-step format. Let us know if you have any questions.

This prototypical smartphone packs a massive 10,000mAh battery

battery phone 1

Most of us are happy to get anything between 2,600mAh and 3,500mAh in a smartphone for battery, but one company is pushing the limit in a big way. Oukitel has been working on a prototypical smartphone that houses a whopping 10,000mAh battery.

As you can imagine, the battery adds a whole hell of a lot more girth than the typical size would, and you would have a tank of a smartphone to carry around. That shouldn’t be an issue for someone who values battery life over size, though. And it doesn’t even look that bad in the few photos of the thing we’ve seen.

battery phone 2

We will always prefer improved battery technology over sheer capacity, but in the absence of development for the former side we’d say this is a nice stop gap for anyone who can’t stand the petite batteries of today. No word on what other specs this thing will have or if it’ll ever come to market, but let us know if you wouldn’t mind owning a brick of a phone in order to get what should equate to days of battery life.
